Description

This Musicality class will combine skills learned in Vocals 1 and Beginning Dance, with a focus on rhythm in singing and dancing. We will cover foundational vocal technique, rhythm in sheet music, beginning ear training, 2-part harmonies, basic dance steps, moving in formations, feeling the beat, and how to be expressive while performing. Our showcase will include a medley of jazzy Disney favorites including songs from Aladdin, The Jungle Book, Toy Story, and Monsters Inc. Whether students are brand new to CYT or have been taking classes for years, everyone is sure to improve their musicality and have a fun time! Jazz shoes are required for this class.

Teacher:

Anna Philipsen

Anna grew up in Portland, Oregon and has been a musician from a young age. At 5 she began playing the violin and continues to play to this day. Throughout high school she performed in several choirs and orchestras, including the pit orchestras for all the musicals at her high school. Anna also took drama classes and was a member of the International Thespian Society. In college she continued to pursue music classes, took vocal lessons, performed improv violin with worship teams, and taught music lessons. Since then, she's continued to perform at events, with worship bands, and in community orchestras. In addition to a love for music, Anna has always had a passion for design. She received a BA in Art & Education from George Fox University. Over the years she has used her gifts in design for developing events, marketing, styling weddings, interior design, and most recently at CYT. Anna lives with her husband Josiah and their three boys, Landon, Dash, and Clay. All three boys are homeschooled and involved at CYT. Anna is continually thankful for how the program has blessed their family and how she can use her passion for design, music, and educating kids at CYT!

Teacher:

Josiah Philipsen

Josiah grew up all throughout Washington and has always been a natural performer. As a kid, he enjoyed playing sports but he would have also loved a program like CYT! As a teen, he began volunteering with Awana and enjoyed working with kids. He was encouraged to go into teaching so he pursued a degree in Elementary Education. During college he spent a summer working as a camp counselor and loved being able to pour into kids in this fun environment. Upon completing his degree in education at George Fox University, Josiah spent a few years teaching 3rd grade and middle school. Professionally he took a different route and now runs a tech consulting company. Josiah still draws on his training in education often and regularly teaches adults about technology through his company’s YouTube channel. He has continued to work with kids at church and CYT. Josiah lives with his wife Anna and their three boys who all love CYT.
